‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. Yes that is right, not even a mouse! This holiday season make sure the only guests entering your home are the ones you have invited! The good news is that there are a few ways you can winterize your house from rodents this winter. A-1 Able Pest Doctors are here to share a few simple tips with you!
Clean Diligently
No one should leave cookie crumbs behind. Yes, Santa, that includes you too. Make sure you are wiping down surfaces, sweeping, and vacuuming diligently. Any small crumb or scrap can be seen as a yummy snack to a mouse or rodent. We do not want to serve them a holiday feast. So storing your food and your any pet food in air tight containers is a good preventative step.
You should also clean up any cluttered areas that might give rodents a place to hide. You can do so by organizing areas such as the attic and garage. Making sure there is minimal clutter and those areas are swept can help eliminate rodents. Make sure they do not turn your home into their home. Clean up to winterize your house from rodents!
Seal Any Cracks, Holes, or Openings
This winter we want you to make sure that the only guests entering your home are the ones that were invited. It is important to make sure that you are diminishing any points of access rodents might have. Our rule of thumb is that any hole or crevice the size of a quarter could be an entry point for a mouse or rodent. This means that taking a quick lap around your house to find these openings is important so that you can effectively close and seal them. Things such as weather stripping your doors, putting wire mesh over your dryer vent and chimney, and caulking crevices can help in prevention. The only thing coming down your chimney this season should be Santa!
Clean Home Exterior
As we hang up decorations and lights, we should also pay close attention to our home’s exterior. Many times, you may overlook cleaning your home’s exterior. It is just as important as cleaning the inside. To start we recommend that you trim any branches and bushes that need cut back. Tidying up overgrown areas and trimming foliage can give these rodents less places to hide outside. Cleaning out your gutters is also another key outdoor area you should clean before the winter.
Lastly we want you to make sure you are eliminating rodents’ favorite hideouts such as leaf piles and firewood. Make sure you are keeping your firewood elevated and at least 20 ft from your home. Along with that make sure you cover your trash and store edible things like bird seed in containers. Taking these preventative steps can help protect your home from rodents this winter.
